Embracing the Snow

This week has brought more snow, some sleet and yesterday some rain. It seems this winter is never-ending. The weather man tells me that average temps for this time of the year should be hitting 40-degrees by next week. We've barely even seen 30s!! We are in a warming trend 'til Sunday, but then the "Polar Vortex" is suppose to be return. Really?! Ugh.

So, in an attempt to embrace the snow, I begged talked my youngest into a photoshoot in the snow. Once I talked it up, she got on board and actually got into it. My oldest was out for the day, but I did manage to get her out for a few minutes after dark for some night shots. 

I'm happy to get these mini sessions with my girls. Time is really flying by. I'm glad for the rare opportunities when they allow me to pull out my camera and capture them. 

Do you remember when your kids were born and everyone told you the time would fly by? I have always known that to be true, but never thought it would go by this quickly.  Marking the halfway point of  her middle school years, Morgan is blossoming into a beautiful young lady, discovering who she is and finding her place in this world. 

She is naturally bright and is bubbling with life and personality.

It has been a joy to watch Addison blossom since starting high school last year. She has grown from a shy, quiet little girl into a confident young lady. She is determined, self-motivated and bright. Her laugh is contagious. 

 

She is in the process of figuring out what she wants to do with her life and starting to think about college. It is a crazy time and it's all happening too fast! 

It sure is a busy time in our lives, but I'm enjoying every minute of it.  

I love being their mom.

The Simple Beauty of White

This week's prompt for the Nurture Photography Winter Challenge is White|Minimalism. I wondered, "How is white defined?" According to Wikipedia, "White contains all the wavelengths of visible light without absorption, has maximum brightness, and does not have any hue." It's truly minimal by its very definition. It further states that "according to surveys, white is most associated with innocence, perfection, the good, honesty, cleanliness, the beginning, the new, neutrality, lightness and exactitude." 

As much as I might dislike winter, there is something wondrous and magical when your part of the world is softly blanketed in white. 

It's pure and clean. It is bright. Did you ever notice how much brighter the night is after a snowfall? Almost, glowing. 

The snow seems to absorb sound and make the world quieter, peaceful.



I chose a mix of some photos I took a couple week's ago in the midst of a snowfall and a few new ones from this past week's latest storm. 



And I as write this, much of the northeast is bracing for the latest storm, a Nor'easter that imminent. 



Despite the beauty that does accompany a snowfall, I am just about depleted of any joy I might have found in snow early on in the season. The thought of 4-8 inches of snow coming our way this afternoon does not excite me. I am counting my blessings though. It could be worse. Areas north of us are likely to experience a crippling snowfall. 



So, I am thankful. And as hard as this season is on me ... I am going to focus on the good; focus on the positive. After all, it is February, it's a short month and there are 39 days 'til spring.

Our First Ski Trip of the Season

A few years back, we decided to take the girls skiing. My husband and I both dislike winter very much and would be content to stay indoors until spring. We used to ski - I actually grew up skiing with my family and, my husband, he went skiing a lot through high school and college. We actually went a few times before we got married, but hadn't hit the slopes since that time. We decided it was time to introduce the girls to the sport, plus it would give us a little fun to get us through the winter.

The girls took to it quickly. We had a great time and have been skiing a few times since. Until this point, we only managed to ski once a season due to the craziness of the girls' gymnastics schedule. Since the girls changed sports this year, we are hoping to get out there more.

Sunday, we packed up our gear and drove a couple hours to a slope. We enjoyed ourselves so much! The girls even conquered their first intermediate slope! We're hoping to make it out a few more times before the season comes to an end.

More snow is on the way today. (blek.) We seem to average a couple of dry sunny days in between snow storms. The weather has been frigid here this week, we've been seeing a lot of single-digit temperatures. We are looking forward to mid-week next week where the temperatures are supposed to hit the mid 40s-50s! It will be a welcome relief.
