Protected

We took a walk down to the bay on the last day of our vacation. There, the waters are much calmer. Its quiet and less busy.

We found that the National Audubon Society had set up a coastal sanctuary to protect the nesting habitats of birds including these Black Skimmers. The birds nest and set up colonies in sandy, coastal environments. For this reason, the society set up a sanctuary, for protection of their natural habitat.

In doing some reading, I found that these cute little birds with their brightly colored bills have an incredibly strong lower mandible. They drag it through the waters in hopes of catching a fish. When a fish touches it, the upper mandible snaps down immediately to catch it. What an amazing creature!

I have plenty more photos from our vacation and more from our walk around the bay. But for now, I'm exhausted as it was a full day of driving! I am missing North Carolina already, but I am thankful to be at home.
